Pushing your boundaries pleasurably
When we fall in love with yoga or writing, we're hungry to push our boundaries and get better.
It's only natural. And it's healthy. But it's also dangerous.
I have injuries from pushing myself to get into postures that were really beyond me. I've spoken to so many yogis who've done the same thing.
I know what it's like to be demoralised when a writing project falls to pieces because I've bitten off more than I could chew. Every writer does, I'm sure.
Finding the balance between what we want to do and what we're really capable of achieving at a particular time is incredibly hard.
Yoga teachers can tell us to listen to our bodies. Writing coaches can tell us to take it slowly. But we have egos, we're impatient. We live in a culture that puts a premium on taking risks.
Perhaps most important, we simply don't know ourselves.
And it's not just a problem for beginners. Not too long ago, I made myself seriously ill practicing a Kundalini yoga kriya repeatedly without listening to my body. Being too ambitious in my writing may not make me ill but it's not fun.
So how do we come to know ourselves and listen to our bodies?
We ask ourselves questions and wait for answers. We wait as long as it takes. We do this regularly, or at least any time we have doubt.
And we find, honour and keep our teachers and readers.
